Toyota has unveiled a new, practical go-kart dubbed the ‘GR KART’, aimed at lowering the barrier to entry for aspiring racing drivers. The project stems from a long-standing goal of Toyota Motor Corporation chairman Akio Toyoda—also known as Morizo—to make motorsports as common and accessible an activity as soccer or baseball.
The GR KART is engineered for convenience and ease of transport. Measuring 1.8m long, 1.1m wide, and 67cm high, it weighs just 83kg. Its design allows it to fit into the back of a minivan, such as the Toyota Noah, and it features an upright storage mode. To facilitate this, the fuel filler, oil catch tank, and carburetor are specifically designed to prevent leaks when the vehicle is stored vertically.
Powering the machine is a 215cc engine. The kart is built for a wide range of drivers, with an adjustable pedal box and steering wheel that accommodate heights from 4ft 5in to 6ft. For those looking to balance the kart, there is a dedicated compartment capable of holding up to 15kg of ballast.
Maintenance has been simplified through several design choices, including a self-charging battery, a belt-drive system with an auto-tensioner, and a special carburetor equipped with a primer pump. The chassis also features a rust-resistant rear axle shaft, metal fuel lines, and a specially shaped bumper designed to prevent other karts from riding onto the rear tires during competition.
Toyota is also offering a range of branded accessories, including fireproof racing gear, gloves, a helmet, and a dedicated toolbox. These additions are intended to help foster a genuine racing environment for enthusiasts of all ages.
Regarding the project’s philosophy, Toyota stated, “The GR KART was born from a desire to make karting, a gateway to motorsports, more accessible and to create an environment in which anyone can experience firsthand the joy of vehicle control.”
The GR KART is priced at 385,000 yen, which converts to approximately £1,800. While the price point is competitive for a dedicated racing machine, the model is currently available exclusively in the Japanese market.
