Emerging Tech Markets Poised to Hit EUR 20 Trillion by 2040, Roland Berger Predicts

A recent analysis by Roland Berger projects that thirty emerging technology sectors will experience explosive growth, expanding from their current valuation of EUR 2.5 trillion to surpass EUR 20 trillion by 2040. This shift is expected to represent more than one-third of total global industrial output. If European policymakers and industry stakeholders implement the necessary strategic measures, the region could secure approximately EUR 3 trillion, or 20%, of this massive market.

Of the thirty fields identified, the firm highlights 14 as particularly critical for the industrial sector, representing a combined potential of roughly EUR 16 trillion. Key areas such as autonomous defense, humanoid robotics, and charging infrastructure are noted as sectors where Europe can leverage strong domestic demand to build a competitive advantage.

The study proposes three distinct pathways for Europe to navigate this transition: establishing global leadership in areas where it already holds strength, such as quantum technology; fostering domestic market dominance in robotics and charging infrastructure; and strategically attracting foreign providers in sectors where the current gap with global leaders remains insurmountable. Furthermore, the report suggests that existing policy frameworks, specifically the European Chips Act and the AI Act, have not yet met initial expectations.

Felix Mogge, a partner at the firm, emphasized that the continent is at a critical juncture. He noted that Europe faces a clear mandate for action, requiring deep collaboration between industry leaders and policymakers to foster an environment conducive to investment and scaling. Without such alignment, Mogge warned that the value creation stemming from these emerging technological trends will inevitably migrate to other regions. The report also notes that among the 30 fields identified, Roland Berger singles out 14 as most relevant for industry, with combined market potential reaching approximately EUR 16 trillion by 2040.
