Strasbourg has officially appointed a new head coach, following the abrupt exit of Englishman O'Neil, who departed for Ligue 1 side Ipswich on June 26. O'Neil had only arrived in France in January, having guided the Alsace-based team to an eighth-place finish and the semi-finals of the Conference League during his tenure.
The club has named 47-year-old Oliveira as his successor. While Strasbourg did not disclose the specific duration of his contract, the appointment marks a significant transition for the coach, who arrives from the Portuguese top-flight club Famalicao. This role represents his first head coaching position.
Reflecting on his new appointment, Oliveira expressed his enthusiasm in a club statement, noting that it is an honor to join the project. He stated his intention to bring emotion and create memories while dedicating his efforts to the development of the club.
Oliveira brings a background primarily rooted in specialized coaching, having spent most of his career working as a goalkeeping expert. His experience includes working with the Portugal national team as well as Premier League sides Everton and Fulham, where he served alongside Marco Silva. In December 2024, he assumed control of Famalicao, leading the team to a fifth-place finish in the Primeira Liga—the club's highest ranking since returning to the top flight six years ago.
Strasbourg is now preparing for the upcoming season, with their opening Ligue 1 campaign match scheduled away against Marseille on the weekend of August 21-23.
